2007 - Brook Run's Unofficial ATLSkater.com Halloween Session and Contest (10/31/2007)
Halloween night was the scene of the "Unofficial Halloween Pool Jam" at Brook Run hosted by the good folks over at ATLskater.com (Nick Scott). The initial plan was everyone put in $10 and winner takes all, but for some reason, there was some 11th hour moaning and whining about the need for 2 divisions...Regular and Advanced....seemingly to keep Jimmy O'Brien and Shawn Coffman out of the running for the money amongst the other groups, but don't say I said that. (haha) In the end, Shawn decided just to judge (he was feeling some sickness coming on....even puked in the parking lot!) , and Jimmy showed up late and just watched. Surprisingly, Ray Fennessey made his first appearance back at the park. It was cool to see Ray skating again...even if only for a little while. Ray also volunteered to judge. The other judges were Raymondo, Scott and Jere Bundy.

After work, I showed up about 6pm or so, and the park was fairly empty. We all guessed the normal crowd of kids must be out trick-or-treating. A few of us even dressed up. Tim Humphries was the Atlanta Flasher (ie. Atlanta Thrashers), Woody Trend and I were both the devil (rightly so? haha), Zack's girlfriend Jennifer wore some crazy purple wig, and there were TONS of kids in the parking lot all dressed up (but they took off before the contest got going....again, trick-or-treating probably). There were plenty for the pool jam though!

Right away knew I wasn't going to be skating in the contest. I was feeling sick as it was (cold going around the office now with the change in the weather) and thought of not even going at all. But I figured I would give it a try. I couldn't stay on my board for shit (not even simple 50-50s!!!!), so I decided to just pad down and take pictures. Good plan. The contest got kicked off shortly before 8pm and was a jam format for 30 minutes. Lots of ripping skating. The judges joked (although mostly true) that each skater got a point per trick...and 1/2 point if it was in the shallow. (haha) A little more than halfway through, Arte Jones (Zack Reed's girlfriend's young son) went up for a frontside smithgrind in the shallow and the board got away from him. It flipped Arte upside down and he landed in the shallow on the side of his helmet. His helmet was loose though and slid up a bit which gave Arte a nice cut and lump above his right eye. There was about a 15 minute break or so while Arte was tended too. In the end, Arte and Zack had to drop out of the contest and take Arte home (hospital?). The contest got going again, and it was down to the wire. The guys were giving it there all, but they were pretty beat from the skating.

Around 8:45, it was over. The judges didn't take long to compare scores and determine the winners. In the end, it was a 3 way tie for third between Tim Humphries, Steven Kuhn and Ryan Pikul. First and second were extremely close. Woody Trend took second with all kinds of rock-n-roll variations (deep end, slides, 360 rocks in the deep, etc), nice frontside grinds, backside 50-50s, and some interesting switch stance carves around the deep wall and shallow. However, it was "old timer", Russ "the Muscle" Mullis that took first place. Russ laid down nice, powerful grinds all over the bowl, his edgers over the hip and big burly backside and frontside airs. I think the run that squeked him past Woody was one in particular where he did just about all the tricks in one run....airs boths ways, grinds over the deathbox, edger, etc. The prizes were handed out and with that, the first annual Halloween Pool Jam was over. Thanks to all that came out for it. Big BIG thanks to Nick Scott (ATLskater.com) for putting it together and to John (Woody's Halfpipe/Brook Run) for allowing the event to happen at the park. Maybe there will be a second division next Halloween where the big guns can compete too! See you there next year?
