| Saturday Nov. 11th, 2006, Ride Skate Shop held the 3rd in a series of contests for the RSA (Ride Skateboards Association) at the Veterans
Skate Park in Alabaster, Alabama. About 35 people entered the contest on this VERY cold day. The day before, it was about 70-75 degrees, but a rain
shower brought with it a cold front that dropped the day time high to some where in the 40's. The sun really never came out all day at the
contest. However, it was another great day at the skatepark...aside from Solomon being taken out early in the bowl by another person's skateboard
accidentally shooting in while he was skating...full on hip slam into the deep wall...Solomon was done for the day. The day ended on a good note with a
great post-contest bowl session as many of the Atlanta folks had come over to skate (Ray Finnesey, Martin, Shawn, and Himee who was passing through
from DC). |

Veterans Park Report - RSA Contest #3 (11/11/06) |
| VERY FRIGGIN COLD!!!!!
That pretty much sums up the day. Saturday was RSA contest #3 at the ol' local park. Brian put together another great event. It was set to go at noon, but a bit of rain passed through and pushed the start back to 2pm. Good news...the park dried up.....bad news...the rain brought with it a cold front that made the temps drop to FREEZING (not to mention the wind that came with it). I don't think I saw the sun come out all day! I was running late, but showed up around noon. I wanted to get some skating in before the event. There were already quite a few people there when I arrived. Pat Wachter and Wighat were there and already had the grill going with free goodies for everyone (Skate Trivia sponsored the contest too). I think they stayed on the grill more to warm up than to feed the kids. haha Chris Coffman and his dad, Shawn, from Atlanta were already skating the bowl. I figured I would get a good hour or so in before the contest.
Padded up and ready to go....I started with some warm up runs. Third run of my day, I was headed towards the deep end at full speed to try yet another backside air. From no where, I hear "BOARD!" and before I could even react, I see a riderless board coming over the coping at me and into my path. It landed sideways right in front of me, I hit it and came to a full stop....well, my board came to a stop....I kept flying through the air. I smacked/tackled the wall with the whole right side of my body. My right hip took most of the slam, but I smacked both hands as well. Keep in mind, it was freezing cold, so imagine how good smacking both hands on concrete felt. It was one of those slams where I was so scared that I was really hurt bad that I jumped right up and started checking myself. I remember folks asking if I was ok, but I couldn't say anything. THEN the pain started to hit. My hip was throbbing. I had to drag myself up and out of the bowl. Padded down, packed up my bag and stowed it back in the car. My day was done. I just limped around the rest of the day and helped judge and take pics. I had sooooo wanted to skate too! Dammit....thanks Spricket (haha). Learn to skate before doing flippy tricks around the bowl!!!! (just kidding ya, Spricket) I know he felt bad for it happening and it was an accident, so no big deal. It happens. Actually....it's probably good....I needed a good slam to get me over my current "skater's block".
Soooo my day was pretty done except for judging duties. I woulda gone home but I promised Brian I would help out...and I actually do like watching the contests. The day seemed to keep getting colder. Finally, at 2pm, Brian got things under way. Once again, some great skating went down. I was really impressed with the non-sponsored Jr. Men's group. I think the top 3 there could easily be sponsored. They could give the Skate Trivia and London teams a run for their money! (since Ride has no skaters in that division). For the non-sponsored Men's division, Butch's son, Austin ripped it up. He has the same laid back, mellow style as his dad. The Boy's Sponsored group was a tough call! It was sooo close all around. Alec Spinosi won with his bag of street tricks and consistent runs. Jay's son, Alex made second and Chris Coffman from Atlanta came in third. I actually picked it a bit different...I had Chris winning, with Alec 2nd and Alex 3rd....but what do I know. haha Chris Coffman showed some improvements in his bowl riding this go around...ollie grabs over the hip, frontside airs in the deep and more...but Chris was not only very cold (shorts and t-shirt) but also sick (stomach). Men's Sponsored went pretty much like the last one...Brian Parks first and Andrew in second. Both had good runs. Brian pulled some crazy rail tricks that really had him WAYYY out front......he did miss every single 50-50 in the bowl he tried though (haha...kidding, Brian).
After the contest ended around 4pm, a big bowl session got underway (again, thanks Spricket for allowing me to sit out of that one...haha). Some more folks from Atlanta showed (Ray Finnesey and Martin) along with a visitor...Himee (sp?) from DC (might have seen him in the Keg Killers video...real nice guy and ripping skater). There were about 10-15 people skating the bowl!!!! Fun times! Chris' dad, Shawn, was ripping with some crazy lines....big airs (leins and slobs) over the hips and grinds all over the place. I think he hit about every tile that has not been skated before. haha Ray was back to it and seemed to be trying to get over his curse from his last visit (when he broke his arm so badly). Martin was....well....being Martin...just ripping. Butch White, Jay Salillas, Geoff Seagars, Barry Gillilland and Tim Spinosi were representing for the local old guy crew (Patrick Jackson was just spectating too last I saw) and Austin, Brian Parks, Spencer and a few others showed what our next generation of locals can do. Around 5pm, I could take no more....did I mention it was cold? ....so I kinda disappeared under the radar and headed home. |
