Saturday March 10th, 2007, Ride Skate Shop held the 5th in a series of contests for the RSA (Ride Skateboards Association) at the Veterans
Skate Park in Alabaster, Alabama. The turnout was even bigger than all the past contests there. The word seems to be spreading! Forty-five eager
competitors demonstrated their skateboarding skills for the four judge panel in both sponsored and open divisions. The weather could not
have been better...sunny and about 75 degrees all day. During practice, skaters were throwing down some great tricks to put into their contest runs. The contest runs
were pretty exciting and the divisions were much closer this time around. Again, I think the skaters are getting more use to contests (ie. no more nerves) and
starting to put together their runs versus just random skating and hoping for the best. Personally, I think the day went to Steven Spencer. Steven practiced daily
for the past 3 weeks putting together a run around the park. His preparation showed as his runs were perfect both times, and he ended up taking first place in
his division. I think that was a wake up call for a lot of the other kids that saw what Steven had done and that practice paid off huge for him. Big congrats to Steven!
As always, the session after the contest ended was the most fun to me. Lots of ripping going down in that "Butter Bowl". I can't wait for the next one in April! |
